Eligibility Requirements

1. Graduation from an accredited dental school.

2. Completion of residency training in an accredited program in oral & maxillofacial surgery or Foreign education and training equivalent to above.  Applicants must either be a US citizen, possess a US work Permit (green card) or have a valid HB-1 visa.  Note a J-1 visa is not acceptable.

Program Description:   The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital offers a two year fellowship in Oral, Head and Neck Oncology, Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. Fellowship training in this program is under direct supervision of Drs. Robert Marx, Michael Peleg, Ramzey Tursun, and Arshad Kaleem. The fellow will spend most of their time at Jackson South Medical Center, but will also perform cases at the main Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Hospital located in downtown Miami, 12 miles north of Jackson South Hospital. On average, there will be four operating days each week. Although the fellowship includes a rich experience in the planning, coordination, and surgery for malignancies (carcinomas and sarcomas) it also includes surgery for a variety of other pathologic conditions such as salivary gland tumors, osteoradionecrosis, bisphosphonate and other drug induced osteonecrosis, and osteomyelitis as well as a significant number of odontogenic cysts and tumors. The reconstructive portion includes specific microvascular and microneural training with an emphasis on free microvascular flaps as well as pedicled and local flaps. There is also a significant experience in tissue engineering translational applications utilizing stem cell harvesting, concentration and placement, recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein, platelet rich plasma and other growth factor utilizations as well as autogenous bone harvesting from all of the traditional sites. All that is complemented with training in facial cosmetics which will add the final tuning for those reconstructive procedures. The fellow will be on-call for the cases operated by the fellow. The fellow will participate in the tumor board for all the head and neck oncologic case, in addition to the Craniomaxillofacial Board at Jackson South Hospital. Fellows are expected to be involved, not only in the surgical treatment of these patients, but also in the daily and long-term management of these patients. The Fellow will be required to complete a research project suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Presentations at national meetings are encouraged. Fellows are considered PGY-6 level residents with a commensurate salary including benefits of malpractice insurance, healthcare for the individual and immediate family as well as meeting support for educational meetings.
