University of Alabama at Birmingham Fellowship in Temporomandibular Joint and Orthognathic Surgery

Fellowship director: Brian Kinard DMD, MD

Number of positions available each year: 1

A 12-month post-residency fellowship to gain further experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex temporomandibular joint disorders and dentofacial deformities. Treatment of complex temporomandibular joint disorders includes surgical arthroscopy and TMJ total joint replacement. Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of those with dentofacial deformities includes clarification of patient’s occlusion needs, facial aesthetic concerns, and possible upper airway obstructions. Fellows will acquire a unique skill set that will allow them to succeed in both the academic or private practice setting.

As a fellow you will be involved in the clinical care of patients throughout all phases of their care including:

  • Initial patient assessment

  • Preoperative planning and virtual surgical planning

  • Surgical treatment

  • Postoperative management

As a fellow you will also

  • Participate in the UAB dentofacial deformities treatment planning conference

  • Act as a resident mentor in orthognathic surgery

Research and Academic Opportunities

Research and other scholarly activity are highly supported with the fellow publishing at least one original research article.

Approximately 100 orthognathic surgery cases

  • Majority of cases double jaw and chin surgery

  • Significant volume of cleft orthognathic surgery

Approximately

  • 50 total joint procedures

  • 120 arthroscopic procedures

Eligibility requirements:

  • A dental and/or medical degree from accredited institutions

  • Successfully completed a residency program from a CODA-accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery program.

  • Eligible for a dental and/or medical license in the state of Alabama
