Summary of Program:
Head and neck cancer and benign tumor surgery: Our surgeons perform neck dissections along with a wide variety of various resections such as glossectomy, mandibulectomy, maxillectomy, orbital exenteration, thyroidectomy, laryngectomy, etc. Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) is also performed by our surgeons as well as skull base surgery. The goal of the two-year fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery is for the fellow to develop competency in surgery of the head and neck as well as major resections. There is no better way to develop skill and comfort in surgery of the neck than to learn techniques in neck dissection. Our objective is that our fellows complete the fellowship feeling comfortable in performing head and neck resections, neck dissections, and reconstructing complex head and neck defects.
Airway management: We perform a large number of tracheostomies and its variations including emergency airway management. The fellow will become very comfortable with performing a tracheotomy.
Reconstructive surgery of major oral/head and neck defects, including microvascular reconstructive surgery. Our surgeons perform microvascular free flaps in addition to a variety of pedicled and other conventional flaps. These are the most challenging of all head and neck reconstructions. Our objective is for our fellow to finish feeling comfortable planning reconstruction of complex composite facial defects (using virtual surgical planning, CAD/CAM surgical guides, navigation, and intraoperative CT), elevation and use of pedicle flaps, and elevation of free flaps.
Radiation and Medical Oncology: The fellow will spend one month of the second year of fellowship rotating with radiation oncology and one month of the second year rotating with medical oncology. These rotations are necessary to fully comprehend the multidisciplinary aspects of care for the head and neck cancer patient.
Strong preferential consideration will be given to applications from individuals who have a documented academic or institutional position pending completion of the fellowship program.
