Program Description
The fellowship is designed to prepare the applicant for advanced ablative and reconstructive surgery, including a robust experience in the management of malignancies of the oral cavity, oropharynx, salivary gland, skin, thyroid/parathyroid, and skull base. You will gain competency in both open and endoscopic approaches to the skull base. You will work closely with both our neurosurgical and endocrine team in a multidisciplinary fashion. Additionally, you will be able to refine your management of other non-malignant disease including large benign pathology, osteomyelitis, osteonecrosis, and traumatic defects. You will gain exposure to any relevant pediatric pathology especially those requiring a free tissue transfer.
From a reconstructive standpoint, you will be well trained in both microvascular and microneural techniques. You will be adept at planning and executing both bone and soft tissue reconstructions including immediate implant placement for future prosthetic placement. Additional interests specific to the applicant can be tailored to round out their experience which may include selected facial cosmetic cases.
The experience will be through a hybrid/private practice with multiple hospital affiliations including University Medical Center of El Paso (affiliated with University of Texas Tech Health Sciences Center of El Paso) and El Paso Children’s Hospital. You will be working alongside rotating oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and will assist in teaching and education.
The aim of this fellowship is to prepare OMFS surgeons at the highest level for a pursuit in either an academic or private practice setting. The city of El Paso, Texas as a border city, provides exposure to uncommon and locally advanced pathology, which is an incredible asset in surgical training. You will additionally gain insight into proper billing and coding for a successful head and neck practice and ultimately be able to build a program in a previously unserved region or supplement an existing one.
